SYNOPSIS & STORY

The nights of Joseon are more honest than the days. By day, etiquette and status seal people’s mouths, but by night the dead return through door cracks and mountain beasts call human names. A shaman who lives on that boundary is never wholly welcomed by anyone. When a sick child breathes again, people call her a vessel of the gods; when misfortune strikes, they immediately point at her as a wicked woman.

One winter night, before a corpse missing its liver, the soul of the dead leaves behind one name: Seoyul. The name of a male nine-tailed fox said to have vanished long ago. The moment that name is spoken, the shrine door opens. Appearing in the damp night air, he does not look at the shaman as if seeing her for the first time. He smiles like someone who has finally found the bride he lost.

He says he will not be late in this life. Yet his tenderness is strangely exact, and his protection is excessively quiet. Wherever the shaman goes, danger disappears, and those who insulted her meet misfortune one by one. The magistrate’s officer warns her that this is not love but surveillance. But the shaman knows there is no lie in the monster’s eyes. His truth has simply rotted for too long, until love and curse can no longer be distinguished.

The god orders her to cut down the monster, and the monster tries to steal her from the god. The human says he will save her, but he too cannot fully trust her choice. In the end, what the shaman must face is not only the obsession of one male nine-tailed fox. It is sacred duty, human fear, the sin of a previous life, and the red thread that has bound her all her life.
